Love Letter to my present

Love Letter to my present

Love Letter to myself

Everyone always tell me to love yourself, embrace your true self, just be your authentic self… But no one ever tells me how to find your own identity or how to love yourself. I wrote a love letter to my present self in the form of an outer garment made out of paper mache, to reflect on my personal identity and to understand what self-love means to me.

heart shaped artwork constructed out of the word 'love' as paper mache.

July 2026

Love letter to my present, 2026 paper mache using ink on paper and polyvinyl acetate glue, with velcro fasteners Having no clue what it means to love yourself, Annie creates a thought-provoking outer garment that quite literally has love written all over it. Addressed to her present self, she questions herself, 'what does my kind of love look like?'. To her, perhaps self-love is about enjoying the little things in life, or it could be taking interest in the unexpected, or maybe it could be the act of learning new things. Whatever form Annie's love may look like, Love letter to my present self serves as a reminder to always choose self-love over self-hate, as that is the first step to self-discovery.

Love and hate co-exist

I have written many letters, diary entries, journal entries over my life thus far. Some carry heavy emotions venting about my frustrations, my struggles, my traumas and self-doubts, whereas others are more encouraging with motivational pep talks, trying to change my mindset and start to see things in a brighter light. My everyday life revolves around feelings of both self-love and self-hate. I believe that love and hate co-exist within all of us and one will not exist without the other. However, there has to be balance between the two, you can't love yourself too much as you will let ego take over, and yet you can't let yourself be consumed by hate either because then you will drown yourself in negativity.

Always choose love instead of hate

When designing the love letter to my present self, I knew that it had revolve around self-love as that is the core message that I want to remind myself every day, every hour, every minute and every second. That is to always choose love over hate, no matter what. I want to portray the idea that love overpowers hate, which is why the word 'hate' is tucked away hidden inside of the artwork and the word 'love' is presented on the outside. Furthermore, the straps of the garment wrap around the body as if they are giving me a hug, which is another representation of self-love. Fun fact, I actually traced those straps according to the size of my arms and my hands, so it is indeed as if I was giving myself a hug twice as there are two sets of arms. All in all, this project wasn't that complicated or difficult to complete. It was the self-reflection that I went through in designing the piece that was the tough part. Even after making the artwork, I still have no idea what it means to love myself… I'm sure one day I will understand it once I get to experience more of what life has to offer, so for now I'm just going to enjoy the present and live in the moment :)

Snippet of the love letter that I wrote to my present

"How are you feeling right now, right this second? Please tell me that you finally learnt how to love yourself, because it is about time that you know how to do that… Don't forget to practice mindfulness and gratitude every single day, because you show love by appreciating the little things… Anyways, I love you *hug* and may all your wishes come trueeee hehe"
